What We Do

Coimirce is a Company limited by Guarantee. The National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland (NBSCCCI) as a function of Coimirce is funded through the Sponsoring Bodies:

The functions of the NBSCCCI are set out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and apply to those who are constituent members. These functions can be broadly summarised into three categories:

The NBSCCCI has reviewed the functions which involve processing of sensitive data on behalf of the data controller in line with recent data protection legislation. To provide clarity to our constituent members 4 separate Memoranda of Understanding and Data Processing Deeds have been developed to cover the following services:

  • To provide specific advice and support on individual cases involving child protection and safeguarding issues, by the National Board’s Case Management Committee to the relevant church body in order to comply with its responsibilities under the safeguarding standards.
  • To carry out a review of data held by church bodies, relating to allegations, knowledge suspicions or concerns of child abuse, for the purpose of the National Board analysing all such data to assess the Church body’s compliance with the safeguarding standards and to report on any issues which arise to the Church body.
  • To provide assistance and guidance where requested by a Church body, in relation to the organisation of a case file including records and documents held by the Church body, concerning allegations of abuse in accordance with the safeguarding standards.
Church authorities can avail of these services by signing the relevant MOU and Data Processing Deed which are available on request by emailing imeldaashe@safeguarding.ie or acunningham@safeguarding.ie .  If you would like to understand more about the data protection requirements involved you can contact the Data Protection Officer by emailing DPO@safeguarding.ie
