Information on Monitoring Practice

Introduction

The main object for which Coimirce was established is to provide advice, services and assistance to any constituent or constituents as provided for in the Memorandum of Association in furtherance of the development of the safeguarding of children within the Roman Catholic Church on the island of Ireland and to monitor their compliance with legislation, policy and best practice and to report upon activities of Coimirce and the cooperation which it receives in respect of such activities to the extent that such activities are always and in all respects carried out with due regard to the doctrines and applicable Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church.

Practice is monitored through:

  • Notification of all allegations, suspicions, knowledge and concerns (against clerics and religious) to the NBSCCCI.
  • Reviews of Child Safeguarding practice which seek to confirm what the current arrangements for safeguarding children are and how known allegations have been responded to. In particular, emphasis will be placed on establishing how practice complies with the standards set down in the Safeguarding Children Policy and Standards 2016.  Reviews are initiated through an invitation from the Church Authority to the CEO of the NBSCCCI. All reviews are conducted by independent reviewers employed by the NBSCCCI who are independent from offering advice on case management or supporting best practice. You can read the completed review reports here.
  • Reviewing and reporting on the management of complaints about how allegations have been responded to.
  • Reporting annually on all activities above
